We are also extremely troubled by the assertion by an officer in Sussex Police that footage of Josie holding hands with her alleged attacker would “undermine” a prosecution.
We would like to explicitly state that holding hands does not constitute consent, and that consent can be freely given and withdrawn at any moment. The majority of sexual violence is perpetrated by someone already known to the survivor – to suggest that a jury would not consider a case where hand-holding had been consented to is extremely concerning.
We will be reaching out to Sussex Police to discuss this decision.
We encourage anyone whose life has been impacted by sexual violence or abuse to reach out: you do not have to face this alone.
