Our beloved Bobby Lee Cook has passed away at the age of 94 on the 19th Feb. 2021, according to Chattooga County Historical Society the which reads:

It is much sadness that we learned of the passing of Bobby Lee Cook this morning. He had a long and illustrious career that took him throughout the United States and the world.

No matter where he was , he was always proud to say Chattooga County was his home. He was always a supporter of the Historical Society and his legacy will always be prominent in our county’s history.

Legendary Georgia attorney Bobby Lee Cook has died at 94. One of the greatest barristers to ever live. A big house on Riverside Drive, a chauffeured Rolls Royce.

Represented the defense—-a man of the mountain people and moonshiners. The model for Matlock (of course). There are so many incredible stories of his life—he is like Paul Bunyan. Truth and myth are all wrapped together.

Former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes told Bill Rankin (AJC): ‘In many ways, he was larger than life.’

Or the time in a moonshine case where Cook was cross-examining the local sheriff. When Cook accused the sheriff of not arresting another moonshiner because he’d been accepting bribes from him, the sheriff threw a Coke bottle at Cook, narrowly missing him.

Cook dragged the sheriff down from the witness stand and began pummeling him.
After a few moments, the trial judge told Cook to let the sheriff get up off the floor, saying, “I think he’s had enough.” The jury acquitted Cook’s client in that case, too.

One of our great legal legends, Bobby Lee Cook, has passed away at the age of 94. He was a tremendous friend & mentor to me, showing all that you could be a great trial lawyer of national renown, even in a small firm or a small town.
