Chris Kirubi. I have too many stories so I’ll just pick three.
1) He tried to call me one morning, agitated that some cables had been stolen from Haco and he wanted me to air it (I was doing the breakfast show on CFM). He eventually came into the studio to find out why my phone was off. I told him I was robbed. He took me downstairs, entered the first shop we came across selling phones and asked: “Do you know who I am?” They said yes and he told them to give me a phone and send the bill to his office. He walked out, hesitated and then came back and gave them a price range 😂2) When he started getting a lot of hate for changing the music at CFM, as a strategy, they came up with a story that he played rock music on the Fuse. He would show up and do a couple of links with Italia to keep up the pretence. I made fun of him, calling him DJ CK and the name stuck.
3) In more recent years I tried to help someone from a well off family and when I went to see him regarding some promises he had made to her he said to me: “Ciku, they have so much money, why help them? Do you know how many people would like to see me? Yet you have a chance to walk into my office and you choose to come and speak on behalf of billionaires instead of bringing me something you need for yourself? What do YOU need?”
I told him I’d think about it and return. I never did. Because when you deal with a man like that you don’t want to ask for small things. Now he’s gone. And you realise the small things are really the big ones. Because time waits for no one. RIP DJ CK.
Though our words can do little, we hope our thoughts and prayers will encourage you this period and always as you mourn, the passing soul.
