Here are Heartfelt messages from people on social media:

I just learned that my friend, Dee Smith, has passed away. I met Dee in May 2009, when he was tapped by the Weber County Democrats to replace fellow Democrat Mark DeCaria when DeCaria was appointed a judge in 2nd District Court in Ogden.

In 2012, I was tapped by then UPD Chair Jim Dabakis to serve as chair of the Utah Democratic Party’s Candidate Recruitment Committee. We had a solid gubernatorial candidate and lieutenant governor candidate and we needed a superior and qualified candidate for attorney general to fill out that slate.

Former Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff was retiring and it was my hope that a great candidate like Dee might have a chance at winning that seat. The two candidates vying for the GOP nomination that year were John Swallow and Sean Reyes. I can’t tell you how many times Dee said no.

He was happy in his position and he was happy raising his children with his beloved wife, Cherrie Brown Smith, but we went after Dee, hard, knowing he would be the best and most qualified candidate on the ballot. When Dee finally agreed to run I thought it was the big guns we had thrown at him who had convinced him but that simply wasn’t true.

Dee was persuaded by his friends who served as police officers in Weber County to file. Although Dee was the best candidate on the ballot we simply did not raise enough dollars to give Dee the support he needed. When I decided to run for UPD Chair in 2017, I called Dee and explained that one of the reasons I came to the decision to run was I never wanted to see good candidates like Dee left behind.

He supported my candidacy and was always a loyal friend. Dee could have easily been elected to the Utah House but he told me he really wasn’t interested — that his daughter’s softball games needed his full attention. It breaks my heart knowing that such a wonderful human being and family man has been taken too soon.

I send my condolences to Dee’s spouse and love of his life, Cherrie, his children and to all who loved Dee. Dee, you were the best of the best, and I will never forget your sacrifice, your service and your friendship. Rest In Peace, my dear friend. #deesmith #loveoneanother #RIP
