Here are Heartfelt messages from people on social media:

I just found out that one of my first FTO’s back in 1998 when I was working in Chicago Heights had a heart attack on duty and has sadly succumbed to this medical emergency. In a time when women officers were still sparse in the area, Gary treated me with the utmost respect, when others talked behind my back or thought of ways to make my life miserable.

He VOLUNTEERED as one of the first officers to ride in a squad with me as a partner while others said I would never make it. What an honor. He took me under his wing, invited me into his home for dinner with his family on duty, and countless other small acts of kindness. Here I am 24 years later and still using the knowledge he bestowed upon me.

Gary you were an awesome human being and I thank you for your vast knowledge in this profession. You taught me how to be the cop I am today. Street smarts and all. RIP in heaven. Gary Hibbs

I’m sad. Numb. Tearful. RIP my High School buddy, Gary Hibbs.
I’m so very happy to have had a long sit-down with Gary less than a year ago. We laughed as we caught up on missed years. Family.

Friends in common. And how, on MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, he snuck up behind me at a to-go restaurant I frequent on my way out of town after seeing patients. Every time he would, in his deep, firm, scary voice…say “place your hands behind your back – you’re under arrest!!” I nearly crapped my pants every time! We’d both laugh hard!
Then we’d hug and share one minute of time, and say our genuine goodbye wishes.
My condolences to Robbie, Scott, and of course the entire family of such a great person. Farewell my friend. You’ll be missed by so so many!

Officer Gary Hibbs… rest in peace my friend. You will be missed!
