Here are Heartfelt messages from people on social media:

I just learned that my friend and colleague Mark Fertig has passed away. This is a tremendous loss for our community. He and I began teaching at SU together back in 2002. He went on to make our Graphic Design program into a regional powerhouse, was one of the most committed teachers on our campus, was always active in substantial ways in service to the university, and published an impressive amount of fascinating material. He cared deeply for Susquehanna and its students, and was always willing to speak his mind and fight for what he thought was in their best interest. He was also a good colleague, generous with his time and expertise.

However, what I will remember most about Mark was his straightforward nature and his wicked sense of humor. Few people speak their minds as forthrightly as he would. If he thought you were wrong, he would tell you. And he’d tell you why. If you disagreed, that was fine, as he judged people by their character, not their opinions. And he would often leave me in stitches at the lunch table, with observations only he could make.

Mark made Susquehanna University a better place, and he made me a better person. He inspired me, and still inspires me, to be a better teacher. And he set a great example of how to grab life with both hands and engage it honestly and with passion.
We miss you already. RIP

Mr. Mark Fertig, you were truly an inspiration and a role model. I may not have made it in the graphic design business, but I sure learned a lot from you. You were one of the most respectful people I have ever met- calling me Mr. Sheridan because you didn’t want to call me Troy because that’s not what my parents call me, but not Edward because of the name I gave myself. You gave me a love and appreciation for film noir that I don’t think anyone else could have. You had a passion for excellence that I will always carry with me. It was an honor to be taught by you. Rip.

Though our words can do little, we hope our thoughts and prayers will encourage you this period and always as you mourn, the passing soul.

May you find comfort knowing that life continues forever in heaven even as the memories shared live forever in our hearts.

Our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers are with the family and friends.

We encourage you all to respect the dead and accord the family heartbroken with the loss of a cherished one, some privacy as you leave a message in the comment session.
