So very sorry to learn of the passing of Michael J. Iafrate. A truly gifted singer/songwriter/philosopher/thinker who touched the lives of countless people in the greater Wheeling community. We were never close friends, but I liked knowing that the city I called home had people like Michael in it. I saw him perform on many occasions and truly appreciated his delicate mastery of the acoustic guitar combined with his soft-yet-soulful voice.
The majority of our interactions occurred online, where we were often allies but occasionally opponents in the seemingly endless banter of Facebook political warfare. But even where we disagreed, I always left an exchange with him somehow knowing and/or understanding more about the world than I had entering it. We also had a playful banter about the history of rock/pop music that invariably resulted in me trying to convince him that David Bowie deserved an exalted status somewhere just below the Beatles but above pretty much everyone else. I never succeeded in this effort, but I really enjoyed trying.
In February of 2014, Michael and James Wodarcyk approached me about filming a music video of one of his new songs in one of the vacant floors of The Professional Building. I practically leapt at the opportunity, and this clip is one of many behind-the-scenes shots I captured that day. To his wife Jocelyn, family, and friends, please accept my thanks for sharing Michael with us and my sincere condolences for your loss. RIP.
