Bobby Unser I have no problem with the racers of today. Across the spectrum of motorsports competition, those at the top exhibit a level of skill that could best be described as superhuman. But I hold a special level of respect for and awe of those I saw in the sixties and seventies when the likelihood of major injury and even death was far greater than in the present era.
Many achieved in a variety of series. Bobby was best known for his Indy successes. He prized his three Baby Borgs. He had successes at Bonneville, on Pikes Peak, on the Sprint Car circuit and in International Race Of Champions (IROC) racing. And he was a heck of an engineer.
I met and enjoyed Bobby and Lisa’s company at multiple Motorsports Hall of Fame of America events. They invited me into their home on more than one occasion. I found respite there while working at the Indian Health Service facility at Chinle. Bobby had great stories. He was his own man. I’ll miss him.
