Our beloved Robert Mcfarland, a Correctional Officer and dedicated volunteer firefighter with the Ely Fire Department. has passed away tragically at the age of 46, leaving his loving wife, children, and family behind.

He was a victim of the assault at the Anamosa State Penitentiary.

According to the Officials with the Department of Corrections, two victims were killed on Tuesday’s assault at the Anamosa State Penitentiary by two inmates who have been charged in the killings.

Registered nurse Lorena Schulte and Correctional Officer Robert McFarland were killed by inmates Thomas Woodard and Michael Dutcher, who corrections officials say were attempting to escape the facility.

“These two public servants were taken from this world by an act that I can only describe as ‘pure evil'” Iowa Department of Corrections Director Beth Skinner said.

Robert Mcfarland’s obituary is not public at the time, we will share more as we learn about the obituary and possibly funeral.

On Tuesday, March 23rd, Correctional Officer Robert McFarland and Nurse Lorena Schulte of the Iowa Department of Corrections were killed in the line of duty following a vicious attack and escape attempt.

Two inmates of the Anamosa State Penitentiary made there way inside the infirmary and obtained two hammers which they used to attack Officer McFarland and Nurse Schulte. Both McFarland and Schulte were beaten over and over again, sustaining skull fractures which ultimately led to their deaths.

A third inmate inside the infirmary attempted to stop the attack but was also beaten and sustained a skull fracture, but survived. The two killer inmates then attempted to flee by using an electric saw to cut through metal rods, but were unsuccessful.

They briefly took another nurse hostage but were subdued a short time later. Officer McFarland had served with the Iowa Department of Corrections for 13 years while Nurse Schulte served for 14 years. They are both survived by their loving families.

Correctional Officer Robert McFarland and Registered Nurse Lorena Schulte died in the line of duty Tuesday, March 24, 2021 at the Anamosa State Penitentiary.

Officer McFarland had served with the Iowa Department of Corrections for 13 years and also served with the Ely Volunteer Fire Department.
Nurse Schulte had served with the Iowa Department of Corrections for 14 years.
